The Queer Motherhood Project

The Queer Motherhood Project

A radical view of Motherhood, fusing live music, video and spoken word, and incorporating elements of verbatim through lived experience.

A collaboration between queer artists Hannah Phillips and Rachel Jones, and featuring video appearances by comedian, writer and actor Jen Brister, and novelist, theatre-maker and psychotherapist Stella Duffy.

The Queer Motherhood Project show played at MAC Birmingham and King’s Head Theatre London, in Autumn 2024.

We plan to continue the project, so follow us on Instagram or Facebook to stay up-to-date, and if you would like to contribute to the ongoing research please click the button below to share your experiences.

This is a warm-hearted, generous-spirited show which speaks to, and for, women whose experiences are not widely acknowledged.
— Andrew Cowie, British Theatre Guide
This powerful show gives validation to the experience of queer mothers. It obviously spoke strongly to the majority of viewers but deserves to be seen by a much wider audience.

As a lesbian Mum who has no biological connection to my sons I viscerally understand how important it is that the status of queer parents should be protected, their voices amplified and their experiences shared far and wide.
— Jen Brister

All too often in considering queer parenthood, the experiences of those of us who are infertile, childless not by choice, or childless by circumstance, are either forgotten or actively ignored. I am so grateful to this company for remembering that we too are part of the story.

We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re childless in a profoundly pronatal culture. Thank you for including us.
— Stella Duffy
